Dear nancy,

Good Morning!

"I Think We Got Blown Up for Nothing"

Like an untold number of U.S. soldiers in Iraq, the brave young men of Bravo Troop were lab rats in a slipshod military experiment. Theirs is the story of everything that's gone wrong in this great fiasco of a war.

by Robert Draper for the Texas Monthly Magazine

A little more than halfway into their year-long tour of duty, with one dead and more than a dozen others wounded by improvised explosive devices, the young men of Bravo Troop found themselves thinking about a quiet little city where such mayhem would have been unfathomable. It was not their tranquil flyspeck towns of Burnsville, North Carolina; or Grants, New Mexico; or Sidney, Ohio; or Daphne, Alabama. Nor was it Killeen, the Central Texas home of their military base, Fort Hood. Rather, the city in question was Al Hillah, the provincial capital of Babil, in central Iraq, which they'd left only five weeks before. They'd begun their tour there because, according to intel, the Shiites were funneling weapons through Al Hillah up to Baghdad. Yet Bravo Troop never found evidence of a major supply line. They encountered no insurgents, no enemy fire.

A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW

I think we have proven that, given an opportunity, we can win. We can build an audience. We can hold an audience. We can make money. We can be successful in talk radio. We have disproven the old theory that liberals can't do talk radio. That's why I feel good about talk radio.

-- Bill Press, Emmy winner, Author, Talk-Radio Host, Former Chair, California Democratic Party

* * *

BuzzFlash has been offering up a series of interviews with progressive radio talk show hosts over the last year. That's because we believe that pro-Constitution Americans vitally need to build upon the small beachhead that has been established to reclaim the airwaves for democracy.

We are glad to talk today with Bill Press, who wakes us up very early here in Chicago every morning, with a very informative and affable introduction to the political news on the horizon.

Press is a veteran journalist, political communications operative, and radio host.  He currently lives with his wife in Washington D.C., where he broadcasts from the Center for American Progress.

Democracy Now: A Relief From Corporate News B.S.

By Thomas Boothe and Danielle Follett, Le Monde diplomatique

A small group of activists in the rural northeastern corner of Tennessee in the United States persuaded their local public radio station, WETS, to start broadcasting the progressive news-hour Democracy Now two years ago. This pocket of Appalachia would seem to be unwelcoming territory for such an endeavor since the economically depressed farming and mining region votes overwhelmingly Republican -- by as much as 75 percent in the last presidential election -- and is, according to Joseph Fitsanakis, organizer of Democracy Now Tri-Cities (DNTC), "the kind of place where 30 years ago you couldn't really do anything politically unless you were a Klan member."

And there was an immediate response; some donors to the mostly listener-supported radio station, which is a partnership between East Tennessee State University and the listeners, warned that continued donations would depend on Democracy Now being taken off the air. It could have been much worse; Fitsanakis points out that in this part of the country, political activism has sometimes been met with personal attacks, including bullets through windows and dog poisonings. "People that got involved in organizing mining, the unionists, have a lot of that kind of story to tell you."

The Illustrated President

George W. Bush is famous for his attachment to a painting which he acquired after becoming a "born again Christian." It's by W.H.D. Koerner and is entitled "A Charge to Keep." Bush was so taken by it, that he took the painting's name for his own official autobiography. And here's what he says about it:

I thought I would share with you a recent bit of Texas history which epitomizes our mission. When you come into my office, please take a look at the beautiful painting of a horseman determinedly charging up what appears to be a steep and rough trail. This is us. What adds complete life to the painting for me is the message of Charles Wesley that we serve One greater than ourselves.

So in Bush's view (or perhaps I should say, faith) the key figure, with whom he personally identifies, is a missionary spreading the word of the Methodist Christianity in the American West in the late nineteenth century

In a presidency of hypocrisy - an administration of exploitation - a labyrinth of leadership - in which every vital fact is a puzzle inside a riddle wrapped in an enigma hidden under a claim of executive privilege supervised by an idiot - this one ... is surprisingly easy."

How Democracy Produced a Monster

By IAN KERSHAW New York Times

COULD something like it happen again? That is invariably the first question that comes to mind when recalling that Hitler was given power in Germany 75 years ago last week. With the world now facing such great tensions and instability, the question seems more obvious than ever.

Hitler came to power in a democracy with a highly liberal Constitution, and in part by using democratic freedoms to undermine and then destroy democracy itself. That democracy, established in 1919, was a product of defeat in world war and revolution and was never accepted by most of the German elites, notably the military, large landholders and big industry.

GOP Haters Handbook

Anyone in search of a concise, scary, and darkly entertaining overview of the Grand Old Party record--or in need of talking points for debating conservatives--will find the perfect guide in The GOP-Hater's Handbook.

Summarizing, detailing, and bewailing the more significant Republican outrages past and present--and some of the more trivial ones--this book is the brainchild of Jack Huberman, the former Canadian who took up U.S. citizenship just so he could vote against Dubya in 2000.

With punchy sidebars and political cartoons, The GOP-Hater's Handbook is the perfect gift for that special GOP-hater in your life--or for any misguided Republican you hope to rescue from the outer darkness.

About the Authors

Jack Huberman is the author of the bestselling Bush Hater's Handbook and its sequel, Bushit!. More of his writing can be found atwww.jackhuberman.com

Methodist ministers against Bush library

By ANGELA K. BROWN, Associated Press Writer
Thu Jan 31, 9:30 AM ET

DALLAS - Some Methodist ministers are making a final yet improbable attempt to stop George W. Bush's presidential library, museum and public policy institute from being built at Southern Methodist University.

They say United Methodist law requires approval from the church's South Central Jurisdiction, whose 290 delegates meet in July. The
opponents say at least one-third of the delegates are against the Bush institute because it will promote his administration's policies
that they feel conflict with church teachings.
