Martin Luther King Day 2008

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example -- the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King's character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.

We commemorate Dr. King's inspiring words, because his voice and his vision filled a great void in our nation, and answered our collective longing to become a country that truly lived by its noblest principles. Yet, Dr. King knew that it wasn't enough just to talk the talk, that he had to walk the walk for his words to be credible. And so we commemorate on this holiday the man of action, who put his life on the line for freedom and justice every day, the man who braved threats and jail and beatings and who ultimately paid the highest price to make democracy a reality for all Americans.

The King Holiday honors the life and contributions of America's greatest champion of racial justice and equality, the leader who not only dreamed of a color-blind society, but who also lead a movement that achieved historic reforms to help make it a reality.

A note from Sam Seder to Dallas Air America

Hi Folks, Nancy asked if I might drop you all a line and let you know what I have been up to. I won't bore you with the details, but I'm living up in farm country in upstate New York where the apples are delicious and the winters long and snowy. My wife keeps me busy painting the house, cleaning grout in our bathroom and keeping our two year old out of trouble!

Meanwhile, I've been doing a show every Sunday 4-7pm EST called Seder on Sundays; you can stream it and even watch it on the sammycam at samsedershow.com. I've also been known to hop on the sammycam for special events like primary nights (the next will probably be on Feb 5 for super duper Tuesday).

Do you miss Marc Maron from Morning Sedition? Well every Tuesday at 11am Marc and I do Maron v. Seder on the sammycam- you can listen later too, with our video on demand at SamSederShow.com.

Finally, I made some arguably funny videos about the GOP primaries, here.http://samsedershow.com/node/2174.

Until we meet again on progressive radio, so long and thanks for all your support!

Sam Seder

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks so much to Sammy for caring about his fans in North Texas and keeping us updated on his projects. Maron v Seder, their new weekly online program (audio and video!) is JUST HILARIOUS and they are getting ready to take it to a subscription bases and you just MUST become a subscriber! Marc and Sam taking news and politics is the BEST! ( almost as great as when Sam talks to Senator Katherine Harris ) You can listen to some of the past shows here: http://samsedershow.com/vod
Internet technology has finally advanced to the point where we can now subscribe to "programs" to watch online. We don't need to just gripe about (MSM) the  mainstream media not talking about what we want to hear about - the catch here is that WE HAVE TO pay for this and this will encourage others to give us more content like this online. As a subscriber you'll be able to listen to the program when you want or you can even podcast them. I think this is the future of non-corporate controlled programming and news.
Speaking of new online subscription based progressive news and talk - the Young Turks http://www.theyoungturks.com/ are now streaming a new daily show and Sammy will be a guest co-host on Tuesday Jan 22nd
We'll have more on the Turks next week! Thanks again, Sam !
Al Franken Begins TV Ad Campaign for Senate Seat
Al Franken for Senate announced today that two television ads will begin running on all four major broadcast networks, as well as on cable. The first ads can be seen Tuesday morning, January 15, in the Minneapolis-St. Paul and Duluth markets.
"We're excited to begin this conversation with Minnesota voters," Communications Director Andy Barr said. "This campaign is about Minnesotans who need a voice in Washington - a voice that will stand up to the special interests and stand up for them on the issues that matter. Throughout this year, Al will be spending a lot of time listening to and highlighting those concerns. To change this country, we need to change a political culture in which people feel like they don't matter. In the Senate, Al will use his voice to make sure that they do. And that starts with this campaign.
"That said, as we begin this year, we think it's important that people know who Al is and why he's running, and we're thrilled that Mrs. Molin was able to help us do so in memorable fashion."
It's hard for me to believe that the same people who elected Paul Wellstone could possibly still be supporting Norm Coleman, but according toTPM, Al has jumped from a 22 point deficit in February of last year to a statistical tie by November. Go Al! Duluth Journal:
Geek the Vote '08
Popular Mechanics compiled these links to make it easier to compare leading presidential candidates on several issues of interest , primarily in areas of science and technology.
They reviewed the campaign Web sites of leading candidates from each party for position papers and press releases that spelled out policy proposals. (This involved judgment calls; campaigns don't all group their proposals using the same language. In particular, automotive, environmental and energy policies tend to cross category boundaries.)
Dallas Air America Annual Fundraiser/Raffle
We only do this once a year and we raise all the money we need to pay all of our bills for the entire year! http://www.dallasairamerica.org/  We have fees associated with our domain hosting (websites) and our meetup costs and it takes a big load off my mind to just take care of all our costs for the entire year.
We are so important to so many people in North Texas - we have over 600 members of our groups (yahoo, meetup, book club etc) and 1400 subscribers to the newsletter. Last year this group provided the seed money to get this newsletter started (it's now completely self sustaining through sponsorships) and the year before our members help start theCodepink of Greater Dallasgroup/webpage.
We have so many exciting things happening this upcoming year with new progressive programming coming back to North Texas and other surprises and new projects. This is a really important year for our country and we MUST be connected, educated and active.
These things are happening because of hard work and dedication and all WE NEED IS YOUR HELP to keep going!!! Thanks to all of you for your support in advance!
We HAVE fantastic prizes to give away and lots of them. We've had some amazing raffle donations this year and everyone who donates at least $10.00 will have their name thrown into a hat for a chance to win these great items.
The Yellow Rose Peace bus destroyed by fire!
Many of you recently saw ( and rode in ) the bus recently in Dallas at the Cheney protest  - photos here. ( Codepink Greater Dallas )
Jim Goodnow and his bus, the Yellow Rose, both have suffered a terrible tragedy. In recent months, Jim has been providing transportation to Iraq Veterans against the War for their various tours and other activities. Jim escaped a fire of suspicious origins that destroyed the bus. The bus was totaled by fire, around 9:30 pm, Friday night, 1/11/08
Katie Couric goes off-script. A new video shows views "behind the scenes at CBS News" and what Couric "had to say about the presidential candidates in between live shots from the New Hampshire primaries." At one point she made "a cutting motion across her neck" when referring to former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and admitted "that she doesn't know much about former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee." She also said that Cindy McCain had "weird blue eyes" that were "freaking [her] out a little."
DISSENT: Voices of Conscience
GOVERNMENT INSIDERS SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE WAR IN IRAQ
Authors: Col. (ret.) Ann Wright and Susan Dixon
Foreword by Daniel Ellsberg
"When the actions of government become dangerous to the security of the nation, it takes a special courage for men and women inside the government to speak out. If we care about keeping democracy alive, we must welcome this book. "
-Howard Zinn, author of A People's History of the U.S.
During the run-up to war in Iraq, Army Colonel (Ret.) and diplomat Ann Wright resigned her State Department post. She was one among dozens of government insiders and active-duty military personnel, who leaked documents, spoke out, resigned, or refused to deploy in protest of government actions they felt were illegal. In Dissent: Voices of Conscience, Ann Wright and Susan Dixon tell the stories of these men and women, who risked careers, reputations, and even freedom out of loyalty to the Constitution and the rule of law.
"This illuminating and remarkably impressive book should be leaked into the government. This book could awaken officials to withdraw their complicity and tell the truth to [the public]. This country will not escape further human, legal, and moral catastrophes, or preserve itself as a democratic, constitutional republic, if that does not happen.  If you're at all like me, you will have a whole set of new heroes when you finish reading this. Dissent: Voices of Conscience could change your life."   - from the Foreword, by Daniel Ellsberg
"Voices of conscience are usually smothered in spin. That the stories of these heroes are recorded here gives me great hope and shows that it is still possible to do the right thing."
-Ray McGovern, Retired CIA Analyst and Presidential Briefer for George H. W. Bush
