The War Card and Dead for Lies |
Many of you heard that the Center for
Public Integrity released its'
exhaustive report, The War Card
which documents the 935 misstatements
(read = lies) made by the Bush
Administration in the 2 years after 911.
*You can search the database
here
* You can watch Amy Goodman's report
from Democracy Now
about the report
here
The most important response to this
report that I read this past week was
from Cindy Sheehan.
~~~~~
DEAD FOR LIES-
by Cindy Sheehan
Once, before I camped out in Crawford,
Tx, I was speaking at a venue in DC and
I called George Bush a "lying bastard."
This was in May 2005; right after we
discovered the revelations of the
Downing Street Minutes which we believed
was the smoking gun that would bring
down BushCo in short order.
We held hearings in June of 2005 that
Congressman John Conyers convened (in a
crowded basement room in the Capitol)
that exposed the deceit of the "yellow
cake uranium from Niger" lie and the
fact that Dick Cheney and Scooter Libby
made many trips to the CIA offices to
"cherry-pick" intelligence. Along with
myself, Ambassador Joe Wilson, and
ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern:
Constitutional Attorney John Bonifaz
wrapped up the panel to explain how and
why the criminal Bush regime should be
impeached and imprisoned.
Since then, I have been hailed or
condemned for my strong language and
told that if I "framed" my language
better, I could be more effective. On
the other hand, some people have told me
to not dare temper my language because
what our government is doing to people
is so heinous that someone needs to
strongly speak out against it. Now
something has again surfaced that
alternately angers and sorrows me.
We're mad as hell and the Dems aren't
listening |
By Jim Hightower, Hightower Lowdown
What I am hearing from across the
country is a surge of angst and
discouragement. In conversations, calls,
emails, and letters, people in general
(and progressives in particular) are
expressing profound dismay at the
deterioration of America's democracy,
not only because of the BushCheney
regime, but also, and especially,
because of the fecklessness of the
Democratic Congress.
"For crying out loud! Why do we even
bother to have elections?" Mark wailed
in an email.
I am afraid of what this country has
become and that at any minute the people
in charge may bomb Iran, and I have lost
all hope that there will be any checks
and balances," Marshaleigh wrote, adding
bluntly, "Congress doesn't work."
Jay bemoaned the dismal performance of
Congress in this letter to the editor:
"Despite the 2006 congressional
elections and the overwhelming antiwar
sentiment among our
citizens...[Democrats] have become
enablers of the White House's
misbegotten Iraq venture."
Sicko" Gets the
Oscar High-Five ...a note from Michael
Moore
January 25, 2008
Friends,
I just wanted to drop you a note to let
you know (if you didn't already) the
good news that "Sicko" has been
nominated for this year's Academy Award
for Best Documentary. It was a pleasant
surprise when we got the news on
Tuesday.
Of course, every reporter who's called
me in the past few days wanted to know
if I plan on giving an "anti-war" or
"anti-Bush" speech, should "Sicko" win,
as I did when we won the Oscar for
"Bowling for Columbine" in 2003. (As you
may recall, it was the 5th day of the
war when those Oscars were held, and I
said from the stage that, while I enjoy
making nonfiction films, we live in
fictitious times with a man of fiction
in the White House. A ruckus ensued with
a loud roar of cheers and boos, then
someone cued the band to get me off the
stage. As host Steve Martin said a few
moments later, Teamsters were out back
loading me into the trunk of a car.)
Well it's five years later and we are
still at war. But there's no booing
these days. 65% of the public is now
opposed to the war and to Mr. Bush. The
Academy, instead of cutting off the
microphone, now nominates anti-war films
for Best Documentary. That's right;
three of the five nominees this year are
Iraq War films!
Memo to Senate Democrats: No One
Believes Bush
Senate
Democrats are now busy giving away the
store to Bush -- again. For what appears
to be the one billionth time in a row.
They are set to give President Bush yet
another victory on the latest FISA bill.
They will allow telecommunication
companies who broke the law to get away
with their crimes (and that is literally
what it is -- a crime).
Unapologetic "Yellow Dog
Democrat" Ken Leach takes on Bush ally
Burgess
|
Ken Leach says it is time the middle class
in Texas' 26th Congressional District had a
representative in Washington.
Incumbent Republican Michael Burgess has
been an adamant supporter of President
George Bush's policies, despite the ill
effects they have had on his district,
particularly the middle class.
"We need to
take our country back," Mr. Leach said in
announcing his candidacy. We need to move
our country forward."
"I want to be the instrument today that
makes the difference today that will be
remembered tomorrow."
Leach says it is time to
break the
stranglehold Tom Delay and his vested
interests have held on the district.
"When Tom DeLay railroaded his redistricting
grab of congressional seats, the Texas 26th
Congressional seat was thought to be a
permanent seat for Republicans,"
Mr. Leach's website says. "however, the
numbers do not add up to that. With a
strong grassroots effort, this district can
be won by a Democrat."It is not going to
be easy, but with your help, it can be
done."
How can you help?
- First of all, you do not have to be
in the 26th to help out.
He will
need help from everyone.
- Cash
is of the essence to beat the smug GOP
juggernaut. It will have to come
from the grassroots. Right now, the
Leach campaign is accepting
donations throughAct
Blue.
- Go
to
Democracy for America
and sign up so you can vote for him as
one of their targeted candidates.
-
Click here
to check
out his stands on the issues and
contact him through his website. You
also can contact him through the site.
Here are some issue highlights
- No
American should have to put off medical
care because of lack of money to pay for
a life-saving procedure. Each
American should have universal health
care.
- We
salute and congratulate all of our
military men and women for their hard
work and sacrifices; however,
Iraq is
the worst diplomatic failure in our
history and a product of our
worst presidency.
Congress
should not vote any more funding for
Bush's War. Our troops should be brought
home at the earliest possible moment.
- We must
stop
corporate welfare programs benefiting
oil companies.
Mr. Leach is a navy veteran, with Vietnam
service. He was In the Sales Promotion
Department of American Petrofina, a civilian
with the Dallas Police Department's Planning
and Development Division, and administrator
with the Field Operations Division of the
Fort Worth Water Department, before retiring
and moving back to Gainesville.
He is a life-long Democrat and has been an
active campaigner for Democratic Candidates
since he was in grade school. He was a
congressional aide in Congressman Frank
Ikard's Office.
The Funniest 'Green' Book You'll Read |
 |
By Tara Lohan, AlterNet
There's a lot of books out there
about how to green you life, but
the folks at
Grist,
took a stab at their own version
(Wake
Up and Smell the Planet).
And it's very, well, Grist --
which, if you aren't a regular
reader of their environmental
news and commentary, means it's
pretty damn amusing. It opens:
We bet we can guess what your
morning routine looks like: You
gently click off your
solar-powered alarm clock, crawl
out of your hemp sheets, don
organic cotton slippers and a
recycled fleece robe, and
shuffle across your bamboo
floors to the bathroom, where
you bathe in rainwater and
botanicals harvested from your
own garden.
Not quite? Good
The book is a reality check of
sorts for the average eco-minded
individual or those looking to
get more green. The narrative
follows the course of the day
and provides information about
everything from shaving tips to
car choices to kitty litter
disposal. The style is fun and
engaging -- and at times, even
downright funny. But that's
Grist's trademark. As their
editor's describe the book:
"It's a guide to making it
through your day with your
values -- and your sanity -- in
tact. And it's proof that you
can help the planet and have a
little fun along the way." Hey,
if you can't laugh at global
warming, what can you laugh at,
right?
