St. Patrick's Day - Celebrating the Green |
St. Patrick is believed to have driven
the snakes from Ireland. Once a pagan
himself, St. Patrick is one of
Christianity's most widely known
figures.
The modern secular holiday is based on
the original Christian saint's feast day
also thought to be the date of the
saint's death. In 1737, Irish immigrants
to the United States began observing the
holiday publicly in Boston and held the
first St. Patrick's Day Parade in New
York City in 1766.
Today, the tradition continues with
people from all walks and heritages by
wearing green, eating Irish food, and
attending parades. St. Patrick's Day is
bursting with folklore; from the
shamrock to the leprechaun and to
pinching those that are not wearing
green.

DFW Premier of A
Soldier's Peace on March 20th |
After
Sgt. Marshall Thompson returned from a
tour of duty in Iraq, two things were
clear to him - the war is wrong and he
needed to do something to stop it. He
set out on a 500 mile walk across his
native conservative state of Utah to get
people talking about the war and the
need for peace.
Featuring Martin Sheen,
Cindy Sheehan, and Ron Kovic,
A Soldier's Peace
documents Sgt. Thompson's 27 day journey
in protest of the war and his call for a
withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.
It has been 5 long years
since the start of the Iraq War. On
March 20th at 7:00 PM at
Angelika Film Center of Plano (7205
Bishop Road), peace activists will come
together to watch A Soldier's Peace
and stand up once again in protest of
this war.
This film has only been seen
in film festivals and has not yet come
to theatres. It has been released to
Texas Democratic
Women of Collin County (TDWCC)
for the DFW Premier. TDWCC is dedicated
to electing a President who will make
Sgt. Thompson's dream of peace a
reality.
This event is open to the public. For

Rick Karr on Government Secrecy PBS Bill
Moyers Journal
|
You may not know James Risen's name, but
you probably know his work: He's one of
the New York Times reporters who broke
the story of the Bush administration
listening in to phone calls and reading
email, without search warrants.
A federal
prosecutor has asked a grand jury to
look into a book that Risen wrote. It
details not only warrantless wiretapping
but also how, when it came to covert
operations in the Middle East, the
Administration made "mistake piled on
mistake", caused an "espionage disaster"
and was "operating in the blind" when it
came to Iran.
Risen was
subpoenaed to tell a grand jury who he
talked to about Iran - in other words,
to reveal his anonymous sources. So far,
the reporter has refused to talk. If
Risen is forced to testify, the public
will be the real loser. Here's why:
Anonymous sources have a lot to lose if
their identities are revealed because a
lot of them are powerful or prominent.
So, if the Federal government can force
a reporter like Risen to reveal their
identities, those sources will clam up.
Watch the Bill Moyers report on
Risen here

James Risen's book is State of War: The

Condoleezza Rice Was
"Bombarded" with Warnings Before 9/11,
Commission Biased Against Clarke |
By Faiz Shakir, Think Progress
New York Times
reporter Philip Shenon's new book - The
Commission: The Uncensored History of
the 9/11 Investigation - paints a
damning portrait of Condoleezza Rice.
Shenon argues that Rice was
"uninterested
in actually advising the President,"
but was instead more concerned with
being his "closest confidante -
specifically on foreign policy - and to
simply translate his words into action."

The Religion of
balance and centrism
|
By Glenn Greenwald - Salon
In reality, it is the
preachers of Centrism and Balance who
stand exposed as the deeply
irresponsible and mindless enablers of
the last eight years. We needed far more
unvarnished opposition to the
administration and the political
establishment that supported it, and far
less of the Balanced Bush apologists and
Centrist Mavens ---- "Balance" and
"centrism" are only virtues when
prevailing circumstances are actually
balanced and centered. When they're not
-- as they haven't been for the last
eight years at least -- respectful
balance and restrained centrism are
delusions, self-regarding luxuries, ones
that can be as dangerous and destructive
as they are slothful and unserious.
For any political commentator perceived
to be any strain of "liberal," the first
requirement for being accorded
Seriousness status by the political and
media establishment is "balance." To be
deemed a sober and responsible thinker,
one must Joe-Klein-ify oneself -- show
what a good, thoughtful, decent liberal
you are by eagerly spending at least as
much of your time praising conservatives
and bashing liberals as you do anything
else. That's what a reasonable,
thoughtful liberal does, by definition.
The converse applies just as rigidly. If
you criticize the Right too stridently,
condemn the Bush faction without
qualification or restraint, or fail to
posit an equivalence between Right and
Left, then -- regardless of the accuracy
or truth of your critique -- you are
automatically deemed too partisan,
shrill, and, worst of all, Unserious.

Swim Against
the Current: Ordinary Americans Can Make
Change Happen |
By Jim
Hightower, AlterNet
The inspiration came from the people
themselves, people that I had come across in
my travels, and found that unlike what you
find in The New York Times or on the nightly
news, there is a very progressive spirit in
the countryside, enormous progressive
activism ... not merely in politics but also
in business, the food economy, health care,
religion, numerous different ways.
These
people's stories were very uplifting, yet
not being told. And then at one point I got
an email from a lady a couple years ago, and
said, "I have a decent job and I do it well,
but I'm constantly thinking that I'm wasting
my time. I want to begin doing something
useful to contribute to changing things, at
least become a cog that's on the right
vehicle."

Swim against
the Current: Jim Hightower on Grassroots
Struggles to Change Healthcare, Religion,
Banking and More
We speak with
syndicated columnist, author and radio
commentator, Jim Hightower about his latest
book, Swim against the Current: Even a Dead
Fish Can Go with the Flow. Hightower served
two terms as Texas agriculture commissioner,
and served as a superdelegate at the 1992
Democratic Convention. He has endorsed
Senator Barack Obama for president.

If the Bush Adm and big telecoms were
using illegal wiretaps 7 months before 911
what was patriotic about that ??- some great
stuff on FISA ! |
 |
|
Dear members of the press
Please stop repeating the administration's
lies about domestic spying as fact.
AP:
Bush says the House version "would cause us
to lose vital intelligence on terrorist
threats" and would not give liability
protection against lawsuits to
telecommunications companies that cooperated
with the government after the Sept. 11, 2001
terrorist attacks.
NYT:
Some 40 lawsuits are pending in federal
courts, charging that by cooperating with
the eavesdropping program put in place after
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the phone
companies violated their responsibilities to
customers and federal privacy laws.
AP:
Bush opposes it in part because it doesn't
provide full, retroactive legal protection
to telecommunications companies that helped
the government eavesdrop on their customers
without court permission after the Sept. 11,
2001, terrorist attacks.
That bold part -- that part of the
"reporting" that doesn't have quotation
marks around it and doesn't have any
correcting remarks after it and doesn't have
a bullshit flag preceding it -- is a lie.
How is it a lie? Let us count the ways.
Former chief executive Joseph P. Nacchio,
convicted in April of 19 counts of insider
trading, said the NSA approached Qwest more
than six months before the Sept. 11, 2001,
attacks, according to court documents
unsealed in Denver this week. [link]
The U.S. National Security Agency asked AT&T
Inc. to help it set up a domestic call
monitoring site seven months before the
Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, lawyers claimed June
23 in court papers filed in New York federal
court. [link]
Every time you repeat the lie that domestic
spying began "after the Sept. 11th attacks,"
a data miner in some basement at the NSA
gets his wings.
Really, though. You would think that whole
WMD in Iraq thing would have taught you guys
a lesson about repeating administration lies
as fact. Try harder to stick to the truth
next time, not the spin. Thanks!

Bush Says Americans Must Thank Telecoms for
Spying on Them, It's "Patriotic Service"

compromise wiretapping legislation
Wiretap Whistleblower on PBS
As Congress and President Bush duel over the
answer to that question, NOW on PBS
interviews a whistleblower with exclusive
insight into the role played by one of those
companies.
Klein tells David Brancaccio about the
"secret room" set up by the National
Security Agency inside his AT&T office in
San Francisco. He also describes in
remarkable detail-with documents to back him
up-how wires were split and extra equipment
was brought in to essentially suck up and
store emails from all over the country.
Klein claims this activity is a violation of
the Fourth Amendment, yet the White House
continues to press Congress not only for
authorization to continue surveillance but
also for legal immunity for cooperating
telecom companies.Read
