Greetings
Everyone at Dallas Air America wishes all of you a very
Happy Thanksgiving!
I also have some special “thanks” this week and they seem to
all be to thank or recognize people who have spoken up and
spoken out and made a difference!
• Special thanks to Albert for all his hard work on the ABC
blackout memo and also for keeping us informed on the
responses he’s receiving from the companies- as you will see
from his article (below) it’s frequently one dedicated
person that makes a huge difference.
• Thanks (again) to Lee for sharing his thoughts with us on
Bush's trip this week to Viet Nam.
• Thanks to all of you that have donated towards the cost of
this newsletter , the costs have doubled from our first
estimates because we now have so many subscribers, about
1,200 ! We welcome the subscribers and thank everyone for
their generous help and to help fund further editions ,
we’ve outlined how you can sponsor an edition ( details
below ) for as little at $20.
I’ve also included a link to a great article and reviews of
some great films you might want to consider over the long
weekend. The article is the cover story of this month's
Rolling Stone magazine on our newest " most trusted names in
news " ( even if it is fake news ) Jon Stewart and Stephen
Colbert written by NYT author, Maureen Dowd.
Then I’ve made two movie recommendations - the great new
film by Emilio Estevez "
Bobby- the movie " about Robert F. Kennedy (it’s a first
film and has received some mixed reviews but I thought it
was just great and I think you will too) and the fantastic
documentary, “Shut
up and Sing “about the long strange trip the Dixie
Chicks took when they stood up against the war in Iraq and
against George W. Bush – speaking of being blacklisted !
Even if you aren’t necessarily a Dixie Chick fan ( I wasn’t
when I walked in and I sure am now ) you STILL need to see
this film.
Thanks and enjoy, Nancy

I haven’t been listening to Air America Radio (AAR)
since the beginning. But I have been listening long
enough to know two things:
1) AAR will be a very powerful tool for progressive
thought; and, 2) AAR will provide progressives and
others like me with the means to speak to those with
similar as well as differing opinions on social and
political matters affecting us all.
It is not a right-wing fad.
Things being the way they are, AAR is a critical
necessity.
Up until recently, social and political
neo-conservatives have subjugated the airwaves,
spinning their lies (... Bill O’Reilly), polarizing
the socio-political landscape (... Ann Coulter) and
spewing irresponsible and frankly insulting
drug-addled opinion (... Rush Limbaugh). Religious
zealots and those forcing their socially
conservative ideocracy and fiscally irresponsible
ways on us have set the stage for a divided, unequal
society, fueling bigotry, fear and aggression.
America is tired of it. The
November 7th elections proved that.
AAR is our voice for change in this
country. For this reason and others, Air America is
important to me personally and I want; no, need to
see it succeed. I know I’m not the only one who
feels this way – just look at the election results
and the dwindling audiences of the aforementioned
talk show hosts.
So, when Air America first started having financial
problems, I was dumbfounded; and the bankruptcy
filing floored me. How could it be that an effective
medium for truth and justice was failing?
In recent weeks, thanks in part to Nancy
Cunningham’s efforts and this newsletter, I learned
how. An ABC memorandum leaked to the media suggested
a number of manufacturers and retailers expressly
prohibited their marketing and promotional
departments from advertising or sponsoring air time
on AAR. The list was extensive and included
manufacturers like BMW, Sherwin-Williams, Levi
Strauss and Johnson & Johnson. Retailers like The
Home Depot; Pier-1; and even a restaurant chain, Red
Lobster, were also on the list.
Reading about this “blacklist” infuriated me. I
couldn’t believe it. Let’s face it - Democrat,
Republican or Independent, at some point you need to
buy cars, decorate or repair your home and buy
clothes as well, as over-the-counter medications for
yourself or your family. You might even want to
eat-out occasionally.
NOTE*** Responses that Albert and others are
receiving from the corporations mentioned in the
memo are linked
here.

America's Anchors -Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert
faked it until they made it. Now they may truly be
the most trusted names in news |
 |
by Maureen Dowd
I thought Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert might be a
little nervous to meet with me.
I was the real news commentator, after all, and they
were the mock. They threw spitballs at presidents; I
interviewed presidents before throwing spitballs at
them.
I had crisscrossed the globe to cover news stories,
while these guys just put on dark suits and threw up
imported backgrounds on a green screen. No doubt
they would try to impress me with some weighty
discussion about world affairs or the midterm
elections. But when I walked into Colbert's office
at The Colbert Report, just off Tenth Avenue in
Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen, the two barely
acknowledged me.
Stewart, rumpled in a gray tee over a long-sleeved
shirt, khaki cargo pants, black Timberland boots and
a Mets cap, was sprawled in a chair with takeout
coffee.
Colbert, neat in a long- sleeved navy shirt, blue
pants and wire-rimmed glasses, was sitting up
straight next to him, holding a paper plate of
fruit. They were already deep in a weighty
discussion.

Coward-in-Chief goes to Vietnam |
 |
|
Below are some thoughts Dallas Air America
Radio Groups member Lee Dunkelberg published prior
to President G.W. Bush's trip to Vietnam. That trip
still is in progress at presstime, and nothing has
changed his views.
by Lee Dunkelberg
I did not serve in Vietnam, though it was the war
of my generation.
I had a college deferment. I had two medical
deferments. I was set.
I did not lose anyone close in Vietnam, though it
ruined one of my mother’s cousins who was a
particular favorite of mine. I was slow to coming
around to oppose the war.
I say all that to set the stage for my comments on
the shallowness and sheer . . . well, I don’t know
what to call it. President “Boy George” Bush is
going to Vietnam.
One must wonder whether he plans to show up in his
flight suit (beer stains and all). Will he land on
the deck of the nearest aircraft carrier and declare
victory in Vietnam?
What about all those "Swift Boaters" and the
right-wing radio dopers and cowards who attacked
Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry as
soft on Vietnam? What about all those GOP goons
who jumped on President Bill Clinton for his visit
to Vietnam?
Hell, Hanoi George
tried to get congress to fast track trade agreements
with Vietnam, so he could wrap them up with ribbons
and bows for presentation during his trip. Congress
quietly said "no". Where were the drugheads,
bullies, cowards and felons of talk radio? Where was
the outrage against Hanoi
George helping our former evil enemy?
Hypocritical jerks, all of them!
Boy Bush once again showed off his cluelessness with
foreign policy before even leaving town. An
announcement about the trip on the White House
website used the old flag of now defunct South
Vietnam. So, Boy Bush managed to spit into the
punchbowl before even arriving at the party.
To make the visit even more shameful ...

Some movies recomendations ... |
 |
|
1.) Shut Up and Sing- Life in Bush
America gets a blunt, honest telling in
this documentary that makes you want to stand up
and cheer without ever begging for tears or glib
sympathy. Natalie Maines, the lead singer of the
chart-topping Dixie Chicks, set off a shit storm at
the start of the Iraq War in 2003 when she told a
London audience, "We're ashamed that the president
of the United States is from Texas." Maines joined
Martie Maguire and Emily Robison -- the two sisters
who founded the Texas band -- in a media attempt to
straighten up without flying right.
Re ad entire Rolling Stone review....
2.) Bobby the movie - By Stephanie
Zacharek
Nov. 17, 2006 | The intentions behind Emilio
Estevez'
"Bobby" -- a fictional drama with the
assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, in 1968, as its
somber backdrop -- ring out like radio waves from a
pulsar.
Kennedy, one of the most charismatic politicians in
American history, reached out to a divided, troubled
nation, one mired in an unpopular war. His ideas
were at once radical and sensible, and he spoke
plainly and eloquently in a way that few
contemporary politicians would dare to, even if they
knew how.
Bobby Kennedy is the best president we never
had, and just hearing his voice in "Bobby" -- the
film uses lots of sound clips, as well as archival
film footage -- raises spectral questions about what
our country would be like today had he lived.
Estevez, who both wrote and directed the picture,
clearly has strong, sturdy feelings for Kennedy: The
movie's press notes tell us how the 6-year-old
Estevez saw news of the shooting on television and
ran to wake his father, Martin Sheen, who'd long
been a Kennedy supporter.

Franken's Leaving Alright...For Iraq
|
|

Franken's Leaving Alright...For Iraq... News of
Leaving Air America, Premature
Right Wing media outlets in the know about liberal
talk, reported the breaking "news" that Al Franken
would be leaving Air America on 12/8. Newsbusters,
Brian Maloney's Radioequalizer, and a number of
other sites all gleefully reported Al's departure
from AA.
One right wing site announced that they only
reported on the story because it could be "verified
via the affiliates." Perhaps they got the info from
the same guy at the Quake in San Francisco who has
posted premature and inaccurate news of Al's
departure in the past.
Even an "idjut" from Huffington Post, who sometimes
uses my body, took off with the story.
Yessir, they were right on the money. Except for a
couple little things.
1. Al is leaving all right...for Iraq and
Afghanistan on a
USO Tour.
This is Al's third trip to entertain the troops in
the war torn area. You know, like Sean Hannity and
O'Reil... Oh, yeah. Better nix those last two. I
forgot. It's only the ones who undermine the troops
who head over to the front lines with our guys. The
ones pushing to send them over...well, you know.
Busy, busy.
2. While some have said he's leaving Ait America, he
hasn't. As Al told me last night, at this point,
he's "made no decision on leaving the show." And it
is up to him. Which means, as of today, when he
returns, he could just as well be back at the Air
America mike as begin a run for Senate or study the
history of bakliva. Nothing has been determined.
So, if you've heard of Al's AA demise, even from
some quack in the Huffington Post, it might serve
well not to believe everything you read. It's kind
of like believing right wing talk radio. You'll only
get misinformation and quite possibly, lose an
election. Better to listen directly to Al. And you
still can.
