Codepink supports Buy Nothing Day!

Friday, November 23: Buy Nothing Day

Codepink http://www.codepink4peace.org

On the busiest shopping day of the year, organize a trip to the mall to hand out anti-war flyers with the "Don't Buy Bush's War" message.  You can also ask parents not to buy war toys.
Idea: Northwest Indiana CODEPINK has been organizing mall walks.  The group's coordinator, Nina, says, "We wear our Out of Iraq T-shirts, put the kids in strollers and walk around the local mall. This has been very effective in contacting new people. We don't actively leaflet, but have flyers for those who ask about our organization."

Consider a Boycott of Holiday Shopping

By Susan Feiner, Women's eNews

Female shoppers, beware.

It's November and that means that Black Friday -- the day after Thanksgiving, the biggest shopping day of the year -- is lurking at the end of the month, raising the risk of a post-holiday debt hangover.

Twenty-three percent of Americans will not pay off their holiday debt until March or later, equaling $14.6 billion in interest-accruing debt, according to a Consumer Reports 2006 survey. Over one-quarter of Americans use credit cards most often when holiday shopping, contributing to the $63.6 billion charged on credit cards throughout the shopping season.

Since as much as 75 percent of retailers' profits accrue during the holiday season, Black Friday represents the point in time when retailers' account books shift from red (debt) to black (profit).

But black fades into red when we switch our standpoint to the consumer's perspective.

, a new online shopping portal designed to fight climate change through carbon offsets. Developed jointly by the publishers of UTNE Reader and online loyalty specialist Moment Marketing Inc., EarthMoment.com provides consumers with millions of competitively priced products from top retailers while dedicating half of its commission-based revenues to certified carbon offsets, one of the most effective ways to fight climate change.

At EarthMoment.com, shoppers have access to more than 15 million products and services from over a thousand leading merchants including Apple, Barnes and Noble, Blockbuster, Circuit City, GNC, Kohls, Macy's, Office Depot, Sharper Image, Wal-Mart, and many, many more. Credo and Veteran's for Peace are helping to oraganize VA Hospital visits !

*The VA hospital visits will take place on December 21. If you'd like to be the  leader, here's what we're asking you to do:

- Call your local hospital (we'll provide the address & phone number) to schedule the visit
- Organize your fellow volunteers by confirming their participation via email or phone and telling them where and when to meet you - Confirm your address with us so that we can send you the box of phone cards to take to the hospital

This year, we have updated our volunteer website so that you can be listed as the local leader and will have access to all of the volunteers' names & contact info -- you won't have to go through us to get it. And you'll receive email updates whenever someone new signs up to attend your visit.
This new functionality will make it much easier for you to be in touch with your fellow volunteers, and it will also allow you to update the details of the visit yourself if you need to change the date or time of the visit.

For more information on how to be a leader or if you'd  just to donate a card

What would Jesus Buy ?

What Would Jesus Buy? follows Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir as they go on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse: the end of mankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt!

From producer Morgan Spurlock (SUPER SIZE ME) and director Rob VanAlkemade comes a serious docu-comedy about the commercialization of Christmas.  Bill Talen (aka Reverend Billy) was a lost idealist who hitchhiked to New York City only to find that Times Square was becoming a mall. Spurred on by the loss of his neighborhood and inspired by the sidewalk preachers around him, Bill bought a collar to match his white caterer's jacket, bleached his hair and became the Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping. Since 1999, Reverend Billy has gone from being a lone preacher with a portable pulpit preaching on subways, to the leader of a congregation and a movement whose numbers are well into the thousands.

Through retail interventions, corporate exorcisms, and some good old-fashioned preaching, Reverend Billy reminds us that we have lost the true meaning of Christmas. What Would Jesus Buy? is a  journey into the heart of America - from exorcising the demons at the Wal-Mart headquarters to taking over the center stage at the Mall of America and then ultimately heading to the Promised Land, Disneyland.

Will we be led like Sheeple to the Christmas slaughter, or will we find a new way to give a gift this Christmas?  What Would Jesus Buy? may just be the divine intervention we've all been searching for.

The Shopocalypse is upon us -Who will be $aved?

One Laptop per child - 8 days left!

One learning child. One connected child. One laptop at a time.

The mission of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child. In order to accomplish our goal, we need people who believe in what we're doing and want to help make education for the world's children a priority, not a privilege. Between November 12 and November 26, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During this time, you can donate the revolutionary XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution.

$399 for two computers! http://www.laptopgiving.org/
